I think you will really enjoy City Island. It's the New England of the Bronx, really different. You can swim at the end of each block. The summer really thrives here. I live in City Island, which you may not have heard of yet. I didn't know it until I moved here. It's a mile long by a quarter mile wide and is part of New York City (not the island across from the FDR).
