Monster man

You might know him as the chronologically-challenged designer of the Echo Park Time Travel Mart or maybe the recently-published author of 100 Days of Monsters. But to me, Stefan Bucher will always be a fairly normal guy who films himself drawing abnormally creepy pictures in the middle of the night. And, there’s a great article by Gendy Alimurung in this week’s LA Weekly about the nocturnal habits of my dear friend.

Stefan just applied the final marker strokes to his 200th Daily Monster, a project I’ve adored, supported and championed for years now. The story has some incredible detail about Stefan’s quirks I didn’t even know (he harbors a flock of plastic flamingos on his lawn?) and we finally get an explanation for the name of his studio, 344 Design (you gotta read the piece for that). But here’s the most fantastic news of all:

This new toucan-beaked critter, Monster 200, is the last of the “daily” monsters for a while. They’ll be going on hiatus while Bucher develops their cousins into an animated TV segment for 2009’s rebooted Electric Company on PBS.

Stefan and I have talked a lot about where the monsters should go after their big internet break, and I think this is one of the best possible homes for the little inky fellas. Can you imagine? HEY YOOOU GUUUUYS!

You can watch a videos of Stefan creating the LA Weekly cover monster, monster #200, and all the 199 other monsters at DailyMonster.com. Congrats, Stefan!

Thank you so much for the lovely shout-out, Alissa. You are so very kind, and yes… you have been a champion of the Monsters from the very beginning. I’m grateful!

And a bit slow, too: I just saw that you blogged about the Monster release party back in April. That was before I got hip to RSS feeds and Google Alerts. :^D Thank you VERY belatedly for that one, too.

I’m sure I’ll catch it with my 3 PBS Kids! :) How fun!
