Walking down Hillhurst in Los Feliz, I stepped into an art installation in a car lot. Strung with flags to attract attention of drivers—who I assume would be distracted from driving their own car long enough to realize they needed a new one—Hollywood Ford was a shifting, shimmering automobile circus. The parking lot was vibrating.

Hundreds of flags flickered in the hot wind. Breezes rippled in from every direction, plucking the strands like guitar strings. The sound of plastic flipping against itself was deafening. I stood there for a very long time and listened. It was like a tiny ocean was crashing above me.

The patterns shifted and shook on top of each other, all the way out to the sidewalk, where you had to walk underneath a kind of citrus-colored flag pergola that was tied up above on the curb. It’s funny though, you could never have had this experience in a car.

In fact, it made you realize just how wonderful it was to walk.
