Horsin’ around

Horses Only

Not too far from where I live, there’s a very special Los Angeles neighborhood with some very special residents. You’ll know you’re there when you start to see the signs.

Horses crossing

They have their own special crosswalks, with their own special crosswalk buttons.

Not just for decoration

And of course, their own special parking spaces.

Hay!

Yes, there are plenty of clues that these very special residents are around.

Horse byproducts

Not all of the clues are as lovely to look at.

Rancho equestrian community

This is what you’ll see in the Rancho Equestrian District, a tiny corner of Burbank where the zoning allows for single-family houses to board horses on their property. And I walked through here the other weekend during a 17-mile walk from North Hollywood to Downtown.

We walked along quiet rows of houses, most of which had at least one horse shuffling through a hay-strewn yard. On the south side of the neighborhood are a string of barns and stables that are adjacent to the equestrian trail that runs along the river.

Multimodal transportation in Burbank

Hard to believe that right in the middle of LA you can see people taking four modes of transportation (horse, bike, car, feet) all in the same few lanes of traffic.

How to walk your horse

And that there are people just going about their day as if it was the most natural thing ever to be taking their horses for a walk down Riverside Drive. Or, in this case, a roll.

Check out more photos from all 17 miles of the NoHo to DoTo walk. And there’s a great 14-mile stairwalk taking place this Monday if you want to join!
